The International Communication Sciences Symposium (ICOMS) brought together a significant number of academics working in different branches of communication. The TÜBİTAK-supported symposium made a name for itself with its invited speakers. Prof Frédéric Sojcher from Paris Sorbonne 1 — Panthéon gave a talk to Sakarya University students and symposium participants about his cinema, which he positions between fiction and documentary.

The International Communication Sciences Symposium (ICOMS), organized within the Faculty of Communication of Sakarya University (SAU), brought together the leading names of their fields and hosted Prof Nabi Avcı, Prof Edibe Sözen, Prof Frédéric Sojcher and Prof Jonathan Stubbs.

In order to bring together people working in the field of communication and to contribute to researchers operating in the field, papers were presented in two different ways, online and face-to-face, at the International Communication Sciences Symposium, which accepts successful studies written on communication rather than a specific subject. The symposium, which received financial support from TÜBİTAK (Turkish National Scientific and Technological Research Council), was held at SAU Culture and Congress Center between 28–29 November 2022.

Professor at Paris Sorbonne Pantheon 1. Frédéric Sojcher made in-depth analyses of the art of cinema with his seminar presentation. In the presentation moderated by Dr Muzaffer Musab Yılmaz from Sakarya University, he shared his interesting findings with the students and symposium participants:

“We should not confuse the time of creation with the time of learning, the time of “thinking” about cinema with the time of actually realizing it. I shot my last feature film, Le Cours de la Vie, in the summer so that it would not conflict with my classes. When I was a student at the Sorbonne (where I am a faculty member today), Eric Rohmer was my teacher. He would do the same thing. I would love to be like him. Because you are a director when you make a movie, not when you dream it.”

“In my opinion, a distinction should be made between cinema schools and universities that provide cinema education. Cinema schools are designed to provide vocational education and a professional approach. Of course, this logic can be applied in universities, but in academia, it is necessary to think, have the ability to analyze, and focus on theories and world cinema.”

“No one knows what the future will bring. I have my doubts. If I were to decry the economic superiority of Hollywood cinema, I would be the first to appreciate a variety of American films. Even though I watch movies in movie theatres, I subscribe to online movie platforms. We should not think in stereotypes, but should be open-minded towards different films and screening channels.”
